Bashir Abu-Rabia'
Bashir Abu-Rabia' was born in 1951 in Abu-Rabia tribe in the Negev. He began his studies at the Avni Institute in Tel - Aviv when he was just 17, and went on to study in Paris. Already during his studies at the Avni Institute, he sold paintings in exhibitions and joint exhibitions with the artist Ofer Lellouche, his classmate.
When he returned to Israel he began working as decorate designer and made special effects for films. Today, the cinema is his main occupation. Alongside practicing special effects, he is also a producer. Abu - Rabia has been painting since childhood, from the age of five. First he uses products that were available, such as oil and coal. He says that once he discovered a store in Beer - Sheva, sealing oil paints. Abu-Rabia’ says that until now he remembers the store owner, his face and voice.
His early career as a painter is almost a mystical inconceivable: one day he was discovered as a child prodigy. His picture was published in the newspaper and people from Israel and abroad come to see with wonder the Negev and the painter.
It all began when one day he meet in a coffee shop his friends, who were older than he. The guy was interested in the strange child, he visited the house of Abu – Rabia’ and he was very impressed by his paintings. Two days later “Ma'ariv” presented a story about a small artist boy from the Negev.
Despite the difficult economic situation, he says, he received tremendous support from his family, especially his father, when it comes to painting.
His painting describes the typical tribe’s life situations. The lines in the painting hide whole picture. It often seems that the lines simulate a typical desert wind; sometimes it seems that in an attempt to disrupt the peace.
